About Abu Dhabi.
Abu Dhabi is the name of both the main city and the state of Abu Dhabi, (by far the largest of seven states that make up The United Arab Emirates). The city is also the capital of the whole of the UAE and the second biggest city in the country after the better known city of Dubai.
Because of its status as the capital, Abu Dhabi houses many important offices of the federal government, is the seat of government and the home of the Abu Dhabi Emiri Family.

Getting around the UAE
The UAE has a first class road network that links all the major cities and centres and unleaded petrol is relatively cheap. However taxis offer an inexpensive service and for many visitors provide the best and easiest way to get around.
Should you decide to drive yourself please read the following:
Car hire prices vary so please shop around for the best price.
If you hire a car, you will be issued with a temporary driving licence by the car hire company based on a valid national or international driving licence (required in Abu Dhabi).
Traffic regulations are strictly enforced so please note the following:
The speed limit is 80kph (60mph) in urban areas and 120kph (100mph) on the open road. (speed radars and cameras are frequently used by the police)
It is illegal to leave the scene of an accident without police authorization.
It is illegal to use mobile phones while driving.
Drinking and driving is strictly prohibited.
Seat belts are compulsory and children under 12 must travel in the back seats.
If you aren’t familiar with off-roading in desert conditions, please stay on the designated road surfaces.
Shop and office hours.
Shopping hours: generally from 9:00am to 1:00pm and 4:00pm to 9:00pm. Although by many shops particularly in the centre of Abu Dhabi are open all day. Shopping malls usually open from 10:00am to 10:00pm while there are many supermarkets that open 24 hours a day.
Many shops stay open on Friday (the Islamic day of rest), but close for Juma (Friday) prayers from 11:30am to 1:30pm.
Office hours: Most government office open from 7:30am to 2:30pm and close for the weekend on Friday and Saturday. Private offices vary with some opening a standard 8:00am to 5:00pm while others take a mid-day break and stay open later in the evening. Most businesses close for the two day weekend although it is not uncommon for some to close solely on Friday.

Public holidays
As Muslim festivals are timed according to the phases of the moon, the dates for Islamic religious festivals can vary and the exact dates are announced just a few days before they occur. In addition if a public holiday falls on a weekend then the holiday is taken at the start of the next working week.
Ramadan
Ramadan usually falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar (Al Hijiri) and is observed by Muslims for 29 or 30 days. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking (and any undertaking activities that aren’t compatible with Islamic values) from dawn until dusk.
Foreign Embassies and Consulates in Abu Dhabi
Embassies and consulates are usually open from 8:45 a.m.–1:30 p.m. All are closed on Fridays and some additionally on Saturdays.

Q. How safe is to travel in the UAE?
A. The UAE is one of the world’s safest places to visit, in fact on no less than 2 occasions it has been voted ‘the world’s safest holiday destination” by the international travel industry.
Q. What languages are spoken in Abu Dhabi and the UAE?
A. While Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken. In addition, airlines, hotels shopping malls and major outlets usually employ multilingual staff and as a result Hindu, Urdu, Chinese, French, German and Tagalog are also spoken.
Q. What time zone is the UAE in?
A. GMT +4 all year round.
Q. What electricity supply is used?
A. 220 volts using two pin plugs.
Q. Can I drink alcohol while in Abu Dhabi?
A. There are many clubs and restaurants that serve alcohol to non-Muslims except during religious festivals such as Ramadan. Outside of these designated establishments, consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited.
Q. Where is it permitted to smoke while in Abu Dhabi?
A. Areas designated for smoking are located in most establishments, however smoking in public areas is prohibited.
Q. What weights and measures system is used?
A. The metric system. (British and US weights and measures are generally understood).
Q. What clothing should a visitor wear?
A. Summer clothing, but with an additional garment for the cooler evenings and air-conditioned buildings. Generally clothing is casual, but visitors should avoid swimsuits, shorts, revealing tops and keep their shoulders covered up, except when accepted such as at beach resorts.
Q. Is the water safe to drink?
A. Most drinking water is produced by desalination so it is usually safe to drink, although many people prefer the taste of bottled water and keep a supply with them at all times to counter the dehydrating effects of the heat.
Q. Is food hygiene generally good?
A. Again the standard is very high, but if you are in any doubt, please avoid meats cooked on open fires or spits and any uncooked salads.
Q. Are there any restrictions on photography?
A. Visitors should be aware that photographing military, industrial, telecommunications and key government installation is strictly prohibited. In addition when taking photographs of people, always ask permission first and avoid taking photographs of women especially when in traditional attire.
Q. What are the rules regarding tipping?
A. Tipping isn’t compulsory, but is generally accepted. Restaurants usually add a service charge (in the case of Abu Dhabi 16%). Taxi drivers do not expect to be tipped, but other services such as hotel staff and baggage porters are.
Q. What is the difference between a market and a souk?
A. There is no difference as a souk means ‘marketplace’ in Arabic.
Q. What is a shisha or hookah pipe?
A. A traditional water pipe for smoking flavoured tobacco.
Q. What is a dhow boat?
A. A traditionally-built Arabic wooden boat traditionally used to ferry goods to the souks.
Q. What is an Abra?

Al Ain City Tour
An oasis of tradition in a modern world
The traditional seat of the Sheiks, Al Ain sits on the site of a true series of desert oases that have been an important stop along the caravan trail for many thousands of years. Never is desert life better demonstrated than a visit to this most traditional of all the main cities in the UAE.
A wealth of culture is waiting to be discovered, befitting its history as a crucial desert trading centre; with bazaars and souks that date back to the 18th century and date palm groves fed by the ancient falaj irrigation system.
No tour would be complete without a visit to the Al Ain National museum and Sheikh Zayed Palace museum located in an old fortress which was the residence of the late ruler Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. More delights await you at the camel track and livestock market where you can watch the camels racing and the owners bargaining.
Next on the agenda is a trip to Jebel Hafeet, the mountain that overlooks the beauty of Al Ain and at whose base sit the hot springs and their reputed healing properties.
